LoMoriello criticizes Conte’s
pro-NRA voting record in Assembly

Assembly candidate calls for stronger legislation to combat gun violence

HUNTINGTON, NY, OCTOBER 17, 2006 - New York State Assembly candidate Barbara LoMoriello today criticized Jim Conte’s voting record against cracking down on dangerous weapons and said she will support common sense laws to combat gun violence.

“We’re constantly watching horrific crimes involving guns in our schools and communities. The latest wave of school shootings only highlights the need to take dangerous weapons off our streets,” LoMoriello said. “Unfortunately, Jim Conte doesn’t share my concern. In fact, his record in the Assembly clearly shows he stands with the NRA in opposing tougher laws to protect our families.”

LoMoriello said Conte:

  •  Voted AGAINST a ban on deadly assault weapons (A.6821-A of 1995; A.6821-B of 1996; A.1268 of 1997);

  • Voted AGAINST banning .50-caliber sniper rifles (A.4471 of 2006)

  • Voted AGAINST the Child Weapon Accident Prevention Act (A.1598 of 1993)

  • Voted AGAINST legislation preventing the sale of guns to criminals (A.8456-B of 2004)

  • Voted AGAINST raising the minimum age of handgun ownership to 21 (A.8223 of 1999)

  • Voted AGAINST making it a crime for the illegal sale of a gun at a gun show (A.8224 of 1999)

  • Voted AGAINST requiring the completion of a firearm safety program in order to get a license and establishing a children’s weapons safety program (A.6552-A of 1999)

  • Accepted campaign contributions from the NRA ( 5/18/99 , 4/28/00 , 6/7/01 )

Unlike Conte, LoMoriello said she won’t be beholden to the NRA lobby and will support tougher legislation in the Assembly.

“I’ll fight to keep guns out of criminals’ hands and away from our children, for safer streets for our families, our children, our community,” LoMoriello said.

In the Assembly, LoMoriello will also support:

  • Banning military-grade .50 caliber rifles, which can pierce armor from more than 20 football fields away (A.4471), and armor piercing, exploding and incendiary bullets (A.2837)

  • Requiring law enforcement officers to report guns, spent bullets and shell casings found at crime scenes to the ballistic identification databank (A.2213)

  • Assisting law enforcement officers in tracking down guns used in crimes by expanding the ballistics identification databank (A.968-B)

  • Putting more Nassau and Suffolk County police officers on the street
